Catalogue Prefix Number Codes

Written by Bruce Dyer

Catalog Number Prefix Codes: Wednesday, 29 September 2004

Thanks to Pat Pitcher's convention seminar and materials I think I may have figured out the prefix codes in the old catalogues. I often wondered why some items in 1970s catalogues, for example, started with a 1 or a 3. This may be the answer.
There are some caveats, but basically this is what it seems like to me:

1- the default number used for most items from vases to animals to whatever
2- ashtrays
3- these appear to have been meant as serving pieces for the 3s include tea services, coffee services, serving dishes, and the like
4- mini animals
5- studio series
6- flower pots and hanging planters
Just a best guess, mind you, but it seems logical
